Course Module

The duration of medical training in Germany is six years. It comprises of 2 pre-clinical years, three clinical years and one practice year before actually starting practice as an assistant doctor.

Requirements

The school leaving certificate of high school is needed to gain admission in the German medical universities. You may need to complete a course from Studienkolleg in Germany if the certificate is not equivalent to the Abitur. Indian students can join medical school immediately after high school. However they need to complete 1 year bridge course to fill the gap between school leaving certificate and Abitur or otherwise the 1st year of graduation needs to be completed. You must attain a minimum of 60% in high school to apply to the German medical universities. Results in the interview and grades of particular subjects are taken into consideration. By 15th July, your application must reach the hochschulstart.de to commence on a course in the winter semester. For a course in the summer semester, the last date is 15th of January. However deadlines may vary from one university to the other.

Documents Required

Attested copies of 10th, 12th and 1st Year BSc mark sheets are mandatory. 10 copies of photographs and the passport are necessary. Two letters of recommendations and statement of purpose are essential. You need to submit the school leaving certificate as well. The aspiring medical students must apply for the student visa.

Language Requirements

A1, A2 and B1, B2 levels of German are necessary for getting admitted in the universities and attaining a job. It is compulsory for getting a work permit. You also need to be proficient in English language to understand the lectures.

Tuition fees:

There is no/ low tuition fee for the MD program in the Universities in Germany. In 2005, a Federal Constitutional Court ruling overturned the traditional taboo on tuition fees. Until then in Germany it was (almost) only the state that paid for tertiary education. At the moment five federal states charge tuition fees from the first semester onwards, albeit relatively modest ones by international comparison. Other Federal states also levy tuition fees for students who have exceeded ten semesters or have opted after graduation to study another subject. Since 2007, the Federal states of Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, Hamburg, Hessen, Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia and Saarland levy tuition fees as of enrollment. Most have set the fees at EUR 500 per semester, but offer secured loans to finance them.

GERMAN LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS:

The TestDaf is a central, standardized test for German as a foreign language, which can be passed at many locations in Germany and abroad. The DSH is taken at the university which has been chosen for the studies. On 1 January 2012, the Goethe Certificate C2: Großes Deutsches Sprachdiplom (i,e, advanced German-language diploma) will be introduced.
